When a man or a woman is put in prison it is the last phase of a long series of events that has caused enormous pain and suffering to their families, their co-workers, all the people of their community, These people have frequently been surrounded by bad influences, the distraction of opportunity to do harm and almost all were either intoxicated or strongly influenced my judgement altering drugs. For many, their stay in prison is the first time in a very long time that they have been able to think clearly. Alone in a cell the prisoner has time to think and consider their life. Even the toughest inmate is not tough when he’s alone. That’s where our books come in. With boredom being the drip, drip, drip of torture in prison, the opportunity to read an interesting book is like a get out of jail free card. The inmate can escape into the drama of an interesting story. What story will they read? DISCIPLING INMATES

At Books Behind Bars, we work closely with the chaplains of prisons all over the United States. The books we send become an enormous discipling opportunity. Far beyond simply bringing the gospel of Jesus Christ to people who would never consider attending a chapel service, these books show the process of deliverance from drugs, alcohol, pornography and every struggle that people endure, they not only give hope but they point the way down the path of deliverance.

TOUCHING CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

The children of prisoners are frequently the recipients of the collateral damage of these people who careen through life smashing almost everything around them. When their parents are not in prison, the children are frequently with in easy reach for abuse and neglect. The very best gift we can give to the children of prisoners is a transformed mother or father. 

Mothers tell us that they prayed for the capture and imprisonment of their own children fearing that if they ran free much longer they would be killed or cause terrible harm to others.

Children need their daddies back. whole and healed. They need their mothers to hug them instead of spending their grocery budget on drugs.

EMPOWERING GREAT CHAPLAINS

America’s prison chaplains are tasked with a monumental job. They are asked to reach the men and women of America’s toughest congregation with very few resources. Books Behind Bars supplies many thousands of books sponsored by real Christians who desire to see lives changed, to these chaplains.
